Number of services required

Since SharePoint has its own instance of SQL Server, do we actually need to run the service SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) and SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER). When I manually start SharePoint on my development machine I do not start them and generally things seem ok.

Can anyone else shed some light on this since the smaller the footprint on the development machine the better.

Also, do we need to start SQL Server Agent (SHAREPOINT)? For things like "Expired Sessions are note being deleted from the ASP.NET Session State database".
